"not expanded to accommodate additional passengers"
R Francis (France)
✅ Verified Review | I use Basel Mulhouse airport at least once per month, on average every other week. I appreciate that it is "compact" meaning it takes very little time to go to a gate. The "compactness" means also that there is not enough seating. This is becoming a major issue. Compactness means also that there are only 3 cafes in the departure area, with few seats. The business lounge is great, food is ok, never crowded. The pick-up and drop-off french side, are again being re-organised. It is a mess, where taxi and private vehicles fight for the same areas. Parking has just been extended with a new multi-storey. There are companies offering remote parking too. There are 3 security check zones, what most people do not know, is that they are interconnected therefore you can use any of the zones, irrelevant which airline you are flying with, or which gates you will go to. This is not sign posted, and there is no queue management. Frequents users visually check the queues before going to security. The passport control flying out is too small for the number of passengers. It was recently improved for passengers coming in. Finding a place where to plug in chargers is difficult. It is a small airport, therefore only 3 shops. WIFI is free for a short period. The web portal to connect does not work very well with Gmail or Facebook login. The airport has 2 entrances, and two exist as it sit on the border between France and Switzerland. It is not made clear to passengers that since both countries are in the Schengen zone, they can freely walk from one side to the other. This airport has grown very fast in the last few years, but the building have not expanded to accommodate the additional passengers. Something needs to happen soon.

"extremely difficult to find anywhere to recharge a phone"
Brian Hill (United Kingdom)
Can't agree with some of the comments about the attitude of staff at this airport - they were just fine. However, be aware it is extremely difficult to find anywhere to recharge a phone or tablet, (there were many quite desperate flat battery people around when the airport closed - 7th December - due to a light plane crash). I resorted to sitting on the floor outside the gents to find a socket; although I subsequently found that if you lift the grills in the floor on the restaurant floor, there are several, presumably used by the cleaners. The airport wi-fi service is great, just hope there aren't too many people trying to use it.

"airport is average"
2 reviews Ernst Kriehuber (Austria)
I fly some 200.000 miles a year around the globe but Basel airport really stands out with regards to exceptional unfriendliness and work-aversed security staff. Sorry to be that bold but I fly from this airport every other week and it is such a constant theme that it is upsetting to other travelers. The rest of the airport is average, since it is small walking distances are conveniently short and most other things are ok. In waiting areas there are too few seats.

"very good airport"

Basel Airport is probably one of the most magical airports I have been to. One side of the airport is Swiss. Shops on this side of the airport will charge you in Swiss Francs. The other side is French, thus, will charge you in Euros. I think parts of the runway is German. The facilities are good. Airport staff are friendly. A very good airport.

"no long walks to gates"
M Mayer (Germany)
I chose Basel Mulhouse Freiburg Airport many times because of it's convenient size: no long walks to gates, no long queues. Except the security staff, who often only speaks French. They don't seem to be interested in the security.

Basel Mulhouse Airport customer review

The worst airport I have seen in years. We arrived from Barcelona and wanted to continue our trip to Munich. Given that we didn't leave the Schengen area we were not supposed to have another security check. We were very surprised when we followed the "Transfer" signs that suddenly there was a security check. We tried to communicate in English and in German with the staff there and it turned out they spoke only French. BSL is a French airport. If you expect Swiss excellence then avoid this airport.

We found this airport dismal with inefficient security staff. Who were also surly and rude. Will not fly there again.

Its not such a big airport and not so busy. I fly every year from Basel to Venice in autumn with easyJet and its always good. The security check is very fast. The terminal is very clean and the seat options are big. The best in the terminal is the Lounge its one of the best lounge worldwide and the architecture is great.

Most disappointing airport in Europe I have used. Despite it being quite busy there were only two lines for security so this took us an age to get through. However the biggest disappointment was the lack of facilities after security (we were in gates 22-32). After passport control on the part of the airport we were in there were no shops and just one very expensive place selling a small selection of food. At the very minimum I would expect a couple of shops including somewhere to but a drink at a soft drink at a reasonable price (there were vending machines and that was it)!

Beware the surly Swissport employees who are not so nice and usually not so helpful. I travel to and from this airport frequently and have never had a nice encounter with a Swissport employee. Furthermore at times the security check for BSL can be incredibly long and slow. If there is a line be prepared to wait up to 30 minutes. For such a small airport it seems counter intuitive to have such long queues for security.
